Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Peru's Most Iconic Trek, Step by Step to Machu Picchu

Official Permits and Availability 2026

The Inca Trail is regulated to protect the route. Limited availability is the most important factor for your reservation.

The Urgent Need for Quotas for the Inca Trail

Only 500 people are allowed to enter the Inca Trail each day (including guides and porters). Permits for the 2026 high season (April to October) generally go on sale in October/November 2025 and sell out within hours.

Recommendation: To ensure your experience on this legendary route, you should book and confirm your permit at least 8 to 10 months in advance.

Essential Trekking Preparation and Logistics

Acclimatization: Your First Safe Step

The highest point on the route is Dead Woman's Pass (4,215 m.a.s.l.). It is mandatory to spend a minimum of 2 to 3 days in Cusco (3,399 m.a.s.l.) before starting the Inca Trail to acclimatize your body and avoid altitude sickness (soroche).
