Enjoy a fascinating tour that will transport you back to the time of the Incas! Immerse yourself in ancestral ceremonies and experience firsthand the majestic Inti Raymi festival, the most important celebration in honor of the sun. You will be dazzled by the best that Cusco has to offer. Don't miss it!
This exclusive Inti Raymi tour in Cusco offers a complete 1-day cultural experience that includes informative briefings, private or group transportation, official tickets to the main ceremony, and a professional bilingual guide (Spanish/English). The optimized itinerary for mystical tourism begins with hotel pick-up to witness the first reenactment at the Qoricancha Temple, continues in the Plaza de Armas with the Coca Ritual, and culminates at the imposing Sacsayhuamán fortress with the traditional rites of the four suyus, the sacred fire, and chicha, accompanied by a delicious boxed lunch. To fully enjoy this Inca festival, travelers are advised to bring their original passport, a small backpack, comfortable shoes, cash (soles), sunscreen, a hat, and a windbreaker, thus ensuring a safe, sustainable, and highly photogenic adventure in the heart of the Andes.
This incredible day begins with a pick-up from your hotel between 6 and 7 a.m. From there, we'll head directly to Qoricancha, one of the most important temples of the Inca Empire, dedicated to the Sun God. We'll settle into a prime spot to enjoy the first ceremony of Inti Raymi, a contemporary reenactment of the ancient festival honoring the sun, full of symbolism and tradition.
Next, we'll travel to the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, where we'll witness two important moments: the Coca Ritual and the Meeting of the Times. In this ceremony, the Inca meets with the mayor of the city, symbolizing the link between Cusco's ancestral past and its modern present.
Finally, we'll arrive at Sacsayhuamán, one of Cusco's most imposing ceremonial fortresses, to witness the culmination of the Inti Raymi festivities. Here you will witness several ancestral rituals, such as the presentation of the four suyus, or regions: Qollasuyu, Kuntisuyu, Antisuyu, and Chinchaysuyu; the Chicha Ritual, the sacred beverage of the Incas; the Sacred Fire Ritual, a purifying ceremony; the sacrifice of the Andean camelid, which foretells the future of the empire; the Sankhu Ritual, where the sacred bread is offered; and the Q’ochurikuy, an outburst of popular jubilation that marks the end of the ceremony. While watching this ceremony, you can enjoy a delicious boxed lunch.
Once the Inti Raymi ceremony is over, we will take you back to your accommodation, concluding our tour.
Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, is one of the most visually stunning and colorful events in Peru. These are the most photogenic spots:
Inti Raymi is the Festival of the Sun, an ancestral Inca religious celebration that honors Inti, the Sun god; every June 24th a grand reenactment takes place, where hundreds of actors participate, recreating traditional rituals, dances and ceremonies.
Inti Raymi is celebrated every June 24th in the city of Cusco, coinciding with the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.
The tour starts in the morning from your hotel in Cusco at approximately 7:00 a.m. and the return is in the afternoon, around 5:00 p.m.
The reenactment begins in Qoricancha, from there it continues to the Plaza Mayor and, finally, to the esplanade of Sacsayhuamán, where the main performance takes place.
Pack the essentials for a great day:
Sunscreen
Comfortable, warm clothing (mornings are chilly and midday is very sunny)
Comfortable shoes
Water bottle
Cash
Hat or cap
Official activities can extend over several days with parades, music, and cultural ceremonies; however, the main reenactment of Inti Raymi lasts only one day, on June 24.
The celebration unfolds in three historical settings:
Qoricancha: Opening ceremony with a greeting to the Sun.
Main Square of Cusco: Symbolic encounter with authorities and continuation of the ceremony, "Meeting of the Ages and Coca Leaf Ceremony."
Sacsayhuamán: Main reenactment with dances, rituals, and offerings.
June is part of the dry season, with sunny days, clear skies, and cool nights. Temperatures typically range from 3°C in the mornings to 20°C during the day. The sun is strong, so sun protection is recommended.
The best place to appreciate the entire Inti Raymi performance is the Orange Tribune, considered one of the most sought-after areas due to its strategic location in front of the Ushnu, the main stage.
