Itinerary

The adventure begins at 4:00 a.m., when we'll pick you up at your hotel for a two-hour drive to Cusipata, where you'll enjoy a hearty breakfast.

En route, we'll stop in Checacupe to explore the historic Inca, colonial, and republican bridges. After about an hour and a half, we'll arrive in the village of Palccoyo, where we'll begin our hike. Here, you'll have the opportunity to see the first of the colorful mountains. After a 50-minute walk, we'll reach the Palccoyo viewpoint, where you can admire not only the main mountain but also the two other colorful hills that make up the landscape. Along the way, you might spot alpacas and, if you're lucky, vicuñas in their natural habitat.

From the viewpoint, the view is spectacular: you'll be able to contemplate the majestic Ausangate mountain and, if you wish, capture photos of the breathtaking scenery, including a section of the Red Valley, whose sedimentary formations are part of the Red River. Next, you'll ascend to the stone forest, a fascinating spot for photos and admiring geological formations resulting from thousands of years of glacial melt.

Finally, we'll descend to the starting point of the hike and board the bus back to the village, where you'll enjoy a delicious lunch. We'll conclude this unforgettable adventure with the return trip to the city of Cusco.

Recommendations

To fully enjoy your Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain adventure, we recommend following these tips to ensure a comfortable, safe, and memorable experience at high altitude.

  • Acclimatize before the tour:
Spend at least 1 to 2 days in Cusco before visiting Palcoyo to help your body adjust to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Dress in layers:
Weather conditions can change quickly in the Andes. Wear breathable clothing and bring warm layers for the early morning and high-altitude sections of the tour.
  • Wear proper hiking footwear:
Comfortable hiking shoes or boots with good traction are essential, as some sections of the trail may be uneven, rocky, or slippery during the rainy season.
  • Bring sun protection:
The sun is particularly strong at high elevations. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or cap to protect yourself from UV exposure.
  • Carry a rain jacket or poncho:
Weather in the Andes can be unpredictable, especially between November and March when rain showers are common.
  • Stay hydrated:
Drink water regularly throughout the day to help your body cope with the altitude and maintain your energy levels.
  • Bring light snacks:
Energy bars, nuts, chocolate, or dried fruit are excellent options for maintaining energy during the hike.
  • Walk at your own pace:
Although Palcoyo is considered easier than Vinicunca, the high altitude can still make walking more demanding. Take your time and enjoy the scenery.
  • Consider coca or muña products:
Traditional Andean remedies such as coca candies or muña tea may help alleviate mild altitude discomfort.
  • Carry some cash in Peruvian Soles:
Useful for purchasing snacks, drinks, or local handicrafts along the route.
  • Keep your passport or ID with you:
Always carry your original identification document during the tour.
  • Pack only the essentials:
A small daypack with water, personal items, and your camera will make the hike more comfortable.
