Recommendations

Travel Recommendations:

  • Acclimatization is Key: We highly recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before your trek starts. This will help your body adjust to the high altitude ($3,400\text{ m}$ in Cusco) and reduce the risk of altitude sickness (soroche).
  • Book Well in Advance: Permits for the Classic Inca Trail are strictly limited by the government and sell out months ahead. Make sure to secure your booking early, especially if you plan to travel between May and August.
  • Physical Preparation: Although you don't need to be an elite athlete, the trek is physically demanding with steep climbs (like Dead Woman's Pass). We recommend doing some cardio and hiking preparation a few weeks before your trip.
  • Pack Light: You will only carry your daily essentials (water, camera, sunscreen, jacket) in your daypack. The rest of your luggage will be handled by the porters or left at your hotel in Cusco, so bring only what is strictly necessary.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water or coca tea during the first few days in Cusco and throughout the trek. Remember to bring reusable water bottles, as single-use plastic bottles are forbidden on the trail.
  • Respect the Environment: The Inca Trail is a protected national park. Please follow your guide's instructions, stay on the designated paths, and carry all your trash out with you.
