Discover another colorful jewel of Cusco. A gentle hike without the crowds, ideal for those seeking rainbow landscapes with less physical effort.
When travelers think of colorful mountains in Peru, Vinicunca is usually the first image that comes to mind. However, a few kilometers away, the Andes mountain range hides an equally impressive but much less crowded secret: the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Range.
Unlike Vinicunca, which features a single mountain with colorful stripes, Palccoyo's landscape is composed of three surrounding colorful mountains that can be appreciated right from the start of the hike. Their ochre, reddish, green, and bluish tones come from the same mineral wealth, but the experience here is notably more peaceful, silent, and exclusive.
If you are undecided between visiting the classic Mountain of 7 Colors (Vinicunca) or Palccoyo, here is why the latter stands out as an excellent alternative:
The main draw of Palccoyo for families, seniors, or travelers who are not in peak physical condition is the gentleness of its trail.
Your transport will drop you off at a high-altitude parking lot. From there, the walk to the main viewpoint takes only 30 to 45 minutes at a very relaxed pace. The path is practically flat, featuring minimal inclines and clear signage. It is the closest thing to a "walk in the clouds" without the strain on your knees caused by other Andean climbs.
In addition to the rainbow mountains, Palccoyo offers a unique geological feature at the top of its route: an imposing Stone Forest (Ccacca Cárcel). This consists of a cluster of gigantic, sharp rock formations that thrust out of the ground like needles due to millions of years of wind and water erosion. If you have the energy, hiking the final 15 minutes up into this stone labyrinth will make you feel as if you are in a prehistoric landscape and will grant you the highest panoramic view of the entire valley.
Throughout the entire walking tour of Palccoyo, if the sky is clear, you will have the imposing Apu Ausangate as a guardian on the horizon. Standing at 6,384 meters, it is the fifth-highest mountain in Peru and the most sacred snow-capped peak in Cusco's Andean worldview. The photographic contrast between the red and green slopes of Palccoyo and the perpetual snow and glaciers of Ausangate in the background is spectacular.
Do not be fooled: just because the hike is short and flat does not mean the altitude should be taken lightly. The main viewpoint of Palccoyo sits at 4,900 meters above sea level.
The air at this altitude is very thin and oxygen is scarce. Even though muscular effort is minimal, your cardiovascular system will work twice as hard. Therefore, it is highly recommended to take this excursion starting on your third or fourth day in Cusco, and to drink plenty of coca tea before departing.
Palccoyo is located southeast of the city of Cusco, in the Canchis province. The overland journey takes approximately 3.5 hours each way.
The weather at Palccoyo is freezing and highly variable due to its proximity to glaciers.
