The Rise of Natural Wonders

Beyond the impressive archaeological ruins and the citadel of Machu Picchu, the Cusco region has established itself globally as a top destination for nature and high-mountain tourism. In recent years, two destinations have captured the attention of thousands of travelers on social media: Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake.

Both are full-day excursions that depart early in the morning from the city of Cusco. However, they offer totally different landscapes, physical requirements, and experiences. If your itinerary is tight and you must choose only one, this guide will help you make the right decision.

Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca): The Geological Rainbow

Known locally as Vinicunca, this mountain became world-famous less than a decade ago when melting ice revealed its vibrant stripes of color. These hues—fuchsias, turquoises, lavenders, and golds—are the result of the oxidation of different minerals exposed to the elements for millions of years.

The landscape is desert-like, rugged, and almost Martian. During the hike, you will be surrounded by immense snow-capped peaks (such as Ausangate, the highest in Cusco) and will see hundreds of alpacas and llamas grazing in their natural habitat. It is the ideal destination for those seeking a surreal and unique photograph.

The Extreme Altitude of Vinicunca: The Big Challenge

The main factor to consider when choosing Rainbow Mountain is not the incline of the terrain, but its altitude. The main viewpoint is at a staggering 5,200 meters (17,060 ft) above sea level, higher than the base camps of Mount Everest.

The trail is mostly flat with a gradual slope, but due to the lack of oxygen, every step feels heavy. The final stretch consists of a 200-meter steep climb that will test your lungs. It is strictly necessary to have spent at least 3 or 4 days acclimatizing in Cusco before attempting this route to avoid severe altitude sickness.

Humantay Lake: The Glacial Mirror

If you prefer alpine landscapes, Humantay Lake is your best option. It is a body of water with a brilliant turquoise and emerald color, fed directly by the melting ice of the majestic Humantay glacier, which rises imposingly just behind the lake.

The contrast between the white mountain ice, dark rock, crystal-clear water, and the surrounding greenish vegetation creates an environment of unparalleled peace. Upon reaching its shores, it is a tradition to participate in a small ceremony of gratitude to the "Pachamama" (Mother Earth) by building small stone towers known as apachetas.

The Physical Effort at Humantay: Short but Intense

Unlike the flat trail of Vinicunca, the hike to Humantay Lake is much more aggressive in terms of elevation gain. The lake is located at 4,200 meters (13,780 ft) above sea level.

Although the altitude is 1,000 meters lower than Rainbow Mountain, the climb is extremely steep and stony. The hike lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of constant zigzagging, which requires leg strength and cardiovascular endurance. The descent requires care to avoid slipping or injuring your knees.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

The weather is a determining factor for both excursions, but it affects each attraction differently:

  • Rainbow Mountain: Highly sensitive to the weather. If you go during the rainy season (December to March), it is very likely that you will find the mountain covered in snow, completely hiding its colors. The best months are between May and September.
  • Humantay Lake: Maintains its turquoise beauty for most of the year. However, in the rainy season, the trail becomes very muddy and slippery, adding an extra degree of difficulty and dirtying your hiking footwear.

Travel Times from Cusco

Both excursions require an early start. Tours usually pick up passengers at their hotels between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

  • To start the Rainbow Mountain trail (Cusipata): The minivan trip takes approximately 3 hours one way.
  • To start the Humantay Lake trail (Soraypampa): The ground trip takes about 3.5 hours, including very winding stretches of dirt roads.

In both cases, you will be back in the city of Cusco around 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.

Can you do both in one trip?

Yes, you can dedicate one day to each if your itinerary allows. There is no tour that combines both in a single day, as they are in completely opposite geographical directions (Humantay to the northwest and Vinicunca to the southeast).

If you plan to do both hikes, we recommend leaving at least one rest day in between so your muscles can recover. Doing two high-mountain "full days" consecutively often causes extreme exhaustion, ruining the enjoyment of the second destination.

Horse Rental: What you need to know

On both the route to Vinicunca and the route to Soraypampa (Humantay), local communities offer horse rental services to help tourists who cannot complete the trek on foot.

  • At Vinicunca: The horses take you for almost 80% of the flat path. However, you must walk the last steep stretch toward the viewpoint, as horses cannot climb those stairs.
  • At Humantay: The rental is only for the ascent stretch and will leave you a few meters before reaching the lake. The descent must always be done on foot for safety reasons due to the steepness of the terrain.

Important: Payment for these horses is usually not included in agency tours and must be paid in cash (Peruvian Soles) directly to the local community members.

Gear and Clothing Recommendations

Since both excursions will take you to over 4,000 meters of altitude in the early morning hours, preparing your backpack is essential:

  • Layered Clothing ("Onion Style"): When you get off the bus, you will feel below-freezing temperatures, but after half an hour of strenuous walking in the sun, you will be sweating. You need to be able to remove layers quickly (thick jacket, thermal fleece, breathable shirt).
  • Trekking Poles: Highly recommended, especially to relieve pressure on your knees during the descent at Humantay Lake.
  • Sunglasses and 100% Sunscreen: At this altitude and surrounded by glaciers, UV radiation and snow reflection can severely burn your skin and retinas in a matter of minutes.
  • Energy Snacks and Water: Chocolates, lemon candies, and at least one liter of water to maintain blood sugar and hydration levels.
